Cruise Ship review: Pullmantur Zenith
Today we will be doing something a little bit different than our usual hotel reviews; we're reviewing a cruise ship! It is the Pullmantur Zenith. It departed from Gran Canaria, Spain to Lisbon, Portugal.
Before getting on board of the ship, there was a big tent where the check-ins happened, with long queues and waiting lines in front of the service counters.
From the outside, the vessel looked vast and majestic.
On the safety front, I was super relieved to see there were enough lifeboats!
The inside had a strong 80s vibe to it, with warm colored carpets, mirrored walls, and metal and glass staircase railings.
Now for the cabin I booked, my first impression was that it reminded me of the look and feel of a budget hotel room. It was quite basic and a tad small.
The bed, however, was extremely comfortable. And the basic amenities were there, although the old and well-used cruise brochures and leaflets should undoubtedly be replaced soon.
The room was for the most part clean except for the occasional spots here and there. Also, the room showed some wear-and-tear, a wallpaper pulling in some places, a patched-up TV cable, or the worn-out fabric on the bed frame which definitely has seen better days.
I planned on putting my 13" laptop in the safe, but it couldn't fit in there, unfortunately, so that was a bummer. However, this cruise was affordable and relatively cheap in my opinion, so I personally did expect some things not to go my way.
That said, the WiFi was another misfortune. It was quite expensive, €70 for a week. And the disappointment was when it suddenly stopped working for two days. Thankfully though, I got refunded for those days when I let them know at the reception desk, so that actually went pretty well at the end.
When I went around the ship exploring, I discovered an arcade room hidden in a corner. It carried the same retro feeling that you could find in other parts of the craft. The ship also had a lounge place with games and various entertainment.
There was a coffeehouse on board called "Café Café", and I heard that they serve the best coffee on the ship.
And speaking of food, for the most part, the meals were decent, they had a large selection from which you can choose according to your preferences. However, personally, as a foodie, I was somewhat disappointed. I might have had high expectations, but I was more or less thinking of cruise ship meals as luxurious and having high quality ingredients; but I was instead presented with your rather blunt everyday canteen quality food!
So to sum it up:
Cons:
- Old and sub-par furniture and decor.
- Small safe cabinet.
- Expensive (not always working) WiFi.
- Not foodie-worthy meals.
Pros:
- Affordable.
- Comfortable beds.
- Safety insured (enough lifeboats).
- Good coffee.
- Large selection for meals.
This an honest, NOT sponsored review.
